Along the way, we have raised three wonderful children—David, Mike and Amanda. God has blessed us since then
with precious additions to our growing family.

What I remember most is the great heritage of pioneers—Frank Stamps, Vep Ellis, V.O. Stamps, James Blackwood, J.
R. Baxter, Jr., Audrey Meier, Albert Brumley, and so many more—people who paved the way for those of us who
came afterward.

I REMEMBER is an outgrowth of my desire to honor so many incredibly interesting
trailblazers, yet giving a very human view of what it was like to be on the road in the most
exciting life I could have imagined.

Some of the people I’ll write about are remembered and honored in the Gospel Music Hall of
Fame. Others who have made important contributions are people that might not be as well
known, but were vital to Gospel music and my life, nonetheless.

I’ll also share the ups and downs of life on the road. It was necessary. It was seldom
rewarding financially. A career in gospel music was insecure, at best. It meant being away
from home and family. Too often the people with whom you dealt were more focused on self
interests than on building the kingdom of God. It wasn’t “heaven on earth” that so many
seem to think it would be. I am sure this is true for most professions.

For me, it was a life I knew from a young age that I was called to do, and that made the difference. I would choose it
all again if the Lord chose it for me. Life that is spent seeking to follow the Lord’s direction and guidance is above all
exciting and joyful. That is what makes life worth living.

So join me, from week to week, in this eSeries as we journey back through the years. You’ll read about what I
experienced—the good, the bad, the ugly, and the sublime.

Most of all, I believe you will discover interesting people, places and events that helped shape Christian music, and I
pray that these eColumns will inspire you to find out more about our heritage and how the Lord has used those days
to bring us to today.

INTRODUCTION
I have been asked by the editors of MyBestYears.com to
share some thoughts each week from a life on the road. I
have traveled an average of 65,000 miles annually for over
a half-century.

During the first two decades of my life, I grew up in North
Carolina, then served a stint in Uncle Sam’s army. Then
most of the next two decades, I tickled the ivories with the
Stamps-Ozark Quartet, Trumpeteers Quartet, Weatherford
Quartet, and the Imperials. Since that time my lovely bride
and I have traveled and recorded as Henry and Hazel
Slaughter, as well as traveling many years with our special
friends Bill and Gloria Gaither.
