Today, everywhere we go, people ask, "You look so young! What's your secret?"
It's really no mysterious secret. What we learned through the years, we have taught
multitudes of people.
The true secret is whether or not you are ready to go HARDCORE!
HEALTH
Everybody has an idea about the word "health."
The words "health" and "healing" come from the Anglo-Saxon root, hal, which means
"whole." "Holy" also is derived from that root. Sound health and wholeness—the
balanced, harmonious functioning of body, mind and spirit—is hardly a new idea, but it is
an unexplored frontier for a growing number of people who choose to live healthy and
whole. That was definitely part of our choice.
But what's the HARDCORE part?
And what does HARDCORE HEALTH mean?
Fair questions all!
For us it means a lifestyle that might seem pretty extreme for most people, and we will
spend upcoming eColumns getting into the nitty-gritty of what HARDCORE HEALTH is.
Our goal through these eColumns is to help you become healthier and more energetic
than you have previously dreamed.
Fair enough?
Let's start with one major point.
RESPONSIBILITY
Clearly, from all the latest research on wellness, one fact stands like a glistening,
inscribed monument:
You are responsible for your own choices. God has given you free will concerning your
body, mind and spirit.
Oh, how we hate taking responsibility for our choices. M. Scott Peck, M.D., the acclaimed
psychiatrist and best-selling author of The Road Less Traveled, wrote:
The difficulty we have in accepting responsibility for our behavior lies in the desire
to avoid the pain of the consequences of that behavior… Whenever we seek to
avoid the responsibility for our own behavior, we do so by attempting to give that
responsibility to some other individual or organization or entity. But this means we
then give away our power to that entity, be it "fate" or "society" or the government
or the corporation or our boss. It is for this reason that Erich Fromm so aptly titled
his study of Nazism and authoritarianism Escape from Freedom. In attempting to
avoid the pain of responsibility, millions and even billions daily attempt to escape
from freedom."
According to medical researcher Dr. Hilde Bruch, all patients come to therapists with "one
common problem: the sense of helplessness, the fear and inner conviction of being
unable to `cope' and to change things."
Quoting Peck again:
One of the roots of this `sense of impotence' in the majority of patients is some
desire to partially or totally escape the pain of freedom, and, therefore, some
failure, partial or total, to accept responsibility for their problems and their lives.
They feel impotent because they have, in fact, given their power away. Sooner or
later, if they are to be healed, they must learn that the entirety of one's adult life is
a series of personal choices, decisions. If they can accept this totally, then they
become free people. To the extent that they do not accept this they will forever feel
themselves victims.
Victims? Helpless? There has to be a better way.
YOUR CHOICES
There is. Self-responsibility lies at the center of wellness and HARDCORE HEALTH.
Notice this one glaring fact that is becoming more accepted by health practitioners all the
time: Your life and health depend upon factors largely under your own control.
Statistically, if you stop smoking, you can possibly add a decade or more to your life.
Change your attitude, and you may be able to add another decade. Weight, alcoholic
intake, exercise, sleep and other factors primarily controlled by you are equally
important. Our present behaviors accurately foretell future wellness.
For starters, here are several key points about healing and health:
- Health is not always measured by the apparent absence of disease. Wellness has
many standards which go beyond thermometer readings and diagnostic print-outs.
- Illness is not always a negative force. Like pain, it can be a beneficial network of
signals which are pointing to imbalance, unhealthy habits or changing patterns.
- Healing is a multi-faceted journey. Conventional medicine is not bad or good.
Alternative health methods are not black or white. A true seeker of health—body,
soul and spirit—asks God for direction and guidance, then utilizes the best of the
best, regardless of the method's label or current popularity.
- Health should not be left to chance or even to the so-called experts. If you do, you
may be at the mercy of your genetics and gadgets. Worse, according to John 10:
10, you cannot be passive about what happens to your body, emotions and spirit,
for Jesus Christ said: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to
destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more
abundantly.”
Self-awareness and active participation in your own wellness influences all other facets of
your health patterns. Self-awareness helps you realistically and accurately assess your
situation. Participation forces you to focus attention on details or facts you may
otherwise avoid.
POSITIVE STEPS
The better you understand how the past continues to influence what you think and do in
all areas of your life, certainly in terms of your health and wellness, the better equipped
you will be to forge your own successful life.
You must stop feeling like a victim. You must make your own choices, with God’s
guidance.
Good choices are vital for good health. Your health is important for so many reasons. Of
course, it prolongs life. No elaboration needed here. But subliminally, although not
necessarily of lesser importance, is the fact that good health and a fit physique is a
positive influence on a person's overall image of himself or herself.
The better you look and feel, the better you deem yourself. As a result, you will perform
better, and others will respond to you more positively.
It is a life-giving, positive cycle that anyone can achieve.
Are you ready for HARDCORE HEALTH?
Prepare yourself by asking, "Am I willing to change in order to be healthier and have
more energy?"
If so, are you willing to do whatever it takes to make the changes that will
radically change your destiny and your lifestyle?
HARDCORE!
Are you ready to go hardcore?
Are you ready to make changes in your life?
For us, years ago, going hardcore healthy it was more a matter of survival
than a simple choice.
The vagabond musician's life is exciting, but it also spawns a lifestyle that
claimed so many of our friends.

You heard Jimmy Clanton on the radio and jukeboxes as the Fifties and
Sixties teen singing sensation who crooned "Just a Dream," "Venus in Blue
Jeans" and "Go Jimmy Go" to the top of the pop music charts. You saw him
on American Bandstand and on tour with all legendary recording artists of
that era.
