THIS WEEK IN HISTORY—Did you know...?
  • This week during 1957, the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England, opened.
What rock and roll group is arguably the most famous to have
played at the Cavern? BONUS: Which soon-to-be-well-known
group took their place as the house band?
  • In 1964, the musical Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway. Who played
    the female lead?
  • 1973, the last episode of Bonanza aired on NBC. What were the
names of the three brothers? BONUS: What actors played Paw and
    the three brothers??
                                                                                      ANSWERS BELOW
Answers to THIS WEEK...
  • The Beatles, best known of all performers at the Cavern Club, made their
first appearance at the CC on February 21, 1961. From 1961 to 1963, the
Beatles made 292 appearances at the club. During 1963, The Hollies
took over the Beatles' slot at the club.
  • Although the part of Dolly Levi in the musical was originally written for Ethel
Merman, she turned it down, and then Nancy Walker was considered, but
eventually Carol Channing was hired, giving her the opportunity to create
    her most memorable role.
  • The blockbuster series starred Lorne Green as Ben Cartwright,
Pernell Roberts as oldest brother Adam, Dan Blocker as middle
brother and gentle giant Hoss (whose given name was Eric), and
Michael Landon as Joseph (or "Little Joe"). It first aired on September
    12, 1959, and ran until 1973, making it NBC's second longest-running
series of all time (after Law & Order). From 1964 through 1967, the show
was #1 in the yearly Nielsen ratings. In addition, Bonanza was also the first
hour-long network television series filmed in color. BY THE WAY, if you
knew that there were two additional brothers, in addition to the better
known Adam, Hoss and Little Joe, you are a true-blue Bonanzaphile!
When Pernell Roberts left the series in 1965, the producers briefly
introduced Ben's stepson named Clay (played by Barry Coe). Then in
1970, 14-year-old Mitch Vogel joined the series as Jamie Hunter, the
orphaned son of a rainmaker. Ben adopted Jamie in a 1971 episode.
CAPTAIN BOB DAWSON spent 38 years flying—from
